NEWS ALERT: HLN Report on Postal Service Price Increase Not Accurate

NEWS ALERT:  Earlier today (2/17/2012) HLN (Headline News) broadcast a report that stated the Postal Service PLANS (emphasis added) to increase postage rates to $0.50 for a First-Class letter even though it raised prices last month.  This report, as presented, is not correct.

Reports in both The New York Times and Bloomberg offer a more accurate account of the facts.  In a letter to Congress, the Postal Service is asking for the ability to raise the rate from the current $0.44 to $0.50 over one or more years as part of a larger plan created with the cooperation of Evercore Partners, Inc. a financial consulting company tasked by the Postal Service to create a financial action plan.  The price increase request is being made of Congress as current law prohibits the Postal Service from raising rates beyond the Consumer Price Index except for “exigent circumstances”.

Lake Michigan Mailers closely monitors actions by the Postal Service.  We will continue to publish updates as circumstances warrant.  In the meantime, customers with questions are encouraged to contact us at 800-653-3121 Ext. 220.
